Our Story

We have been growing together since 2015. Started just 500 meters up the road, renting land from Solomon Brook Farm with good friends. The team has changed with each season, but the Soil Mates remain learning, growing, suffering and thriving in the variable weather conditions.

Soil Mates Farm is located in Farmington, Nova Scotia run by Mykal Koloff and Marena Thomson. We are first-generation farmers who are passionate about feeding ourselves, our community and our soil. Together we grow a diverse offering of vegetables, culinary herbs, transplants, flowers and trees. We work to provide high-quality and nutritious produce grown in an ecologically responsible way for our community.

We focus on growing high-quality, delicious vegetables while continuously working to improve our soil health through the use of cover crops and proper nutrient management. We choose to encourage biodiversity on our farm by creating habitat for birds, frogs, snakes, bees, worms, and more. This biodiversity helps us control pests and diseases, make nutrients available to our crops, while sharing the land with those who occupy the ecosystem naturally. We also control pests and diseases through physical barriers (such as row cover and insect netting), crop rotation and biological controls.

Our vegetables are grown in soil, are non-GMO and without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Although we are not certified organic, we practice the standards to the best of our abilities.

Our farm produce is sold on the beautiful South Shore of Nova Scotia. You can find us weekly at the Lunenburg Farmers' Market. During the growing season, several restaurants & retail stores feature our vegetables & herbs on the South Shore including Kiwi Pantry, Keliza, Famous Town Pie Shop, Boathouse Bites, Shore Lunch, Lincoln Street Food & Mateus Bistro.

Mareena, Mykal, Nymphadora, Dot & Hazelnut appreciate all of the community support!
